A

abaciscus square border enclosing part or entire pattern of a mosaic; small tile.
abstraction omission or severe simplification of details in drawings, so that the basis of a design can be explained.
accessory element that is not essential to the use or character of a design, but which enhances the general effect.
accumulation collection of features derived from different periods used to suggest chronological sequence.
achromatic creation with only white and black or white and gold.
addorsed set back-to-back, such two identical figures or patterns facing in opposite directions.
adhocism essentially a collage design, where every part or each element of a creation is designed with scant regard to the whole, and often involves disparate parts taken from catalogues.
aegicrane classical ornament of ra,'s or goat's head or skull.
affronted identical figures or patterns facing each other.
aliform wing-shaped; design with additions resembling wings.
annular ring-shaped.
anthemia decorative group of leafy forms, often used alternately with the palmette or lotus.
