must learned "something"

I can still remember what my college senior said about being an architecture student “four years of study, I’ll be graduated next month, but I still don’t know what I’ve learned and what I’ve earned in this field”. I laugh so loud that time, but somehow I knew that it wasn’t and won’t be totally true for me. Here I tell you…

4 years sacrifice

Architecture comes from the Greek word – arkhitekton, formed by the word arkhi that is meant “a chief” and tekton or "builder" in English. In former times, architect held the whole process of a building – being a designer, a drawer, a carpenter, a mason, and a building supervisor – so the tekton’s meant as what its took a part on, too. But in general, architecture means the principal things of building; durability, functionality, and aesthetics principles.

Nowadays, the meaning of architecture extends in compliance with the advance of technology and the more blend of the design work fields. Today we can say that architecture is the mix of art and science of designing and constructing buildings. It’s not only about technical problems such as the building material, the light and shadow, the structure, or how to construct the building. As now we see commonly that some architects do the landscape architecture and/or even the urban design too. It’s totally impossible if they ignore the political, social, economical and cultural problems, the environmental things, and aesthetic considerations. In other case, at the micro-level of architecture, some of the interior designers work in team with the product designer, the ceramic manufacturer, the painter, or even with the fabric artisan – nevertheless it’s true that some of them want to do everything themselves.

See? I’ve learned “something”. And the most important is that I’ve earned some things; I realized in what field I should work to, I realized my true interest, and it’s totally not “to be an architect”. I can stay in front of my laptop screen for over a half day non-stop to do LOOKLET but I need two hours of sleep for every half day to do my AUTOCAD, I can memorize many fashion websites but remember none of architectural website, I know how to dress people well but troublesome in “dressing” my building designs up.. The point is that I’m not defined in architecture, especially in practical architecture.

I know that many architecture students have the same feeling like me. Some of them push themselves so hard to be an architect (I did this but finally feel sorry for myself) while some others try to find their own happiness in other field. Myself; maybe I can survive in this field of study, but not to be an architect. I could be a painter for the interior designer, or being a sofa designer, a vase designer, a photo-frame designer, a fabric artisan, or maybe a fashion stylist for the architect, landscape architect, urban designer, and interior designer.. LOL *♥♥♥*

sincerely, desperately fashioned

my first step

In the mid of 2005, I started my first step in architecture. I graduated at the architecture department, University of Indonesia.

Six years ago, i chose my way of life without knowing what architecture is all about. I didn't know how sucks it would be, not realized that it would take almost of my "me time", and not even asked to two of my aunts, one of my uncle, and two of my cousins (they're architects) about what people do in architecture or how they survive. One thing I knew for sure: I LOVE DESIGN.

Now, almost six years passed and I'm very berry super mega ultra proud to say that I CAN SURVIVE! Although, finally i can say it too: I NEVER WANT TO BE AN ARCHITECT (but for my own home). LOL!

Nevertheless, architecture has taught me many things about design: scale, proportion, composition, texture, color, how to present my design, and many more. Architecture knowledge (other field, too) is costly but it makes me "rich" in the end...
